Your first song in one week: a 7-day plan
Seven days from now, you can play a Beethoven melody from start to finish. The plan is small on purpose: short daily sessions beat one heroic weekend, because your fingers learn while you sleep. The target is Ode to Joy — the easiest famous melody in C major, right hand only.
The week at a glance
| Day | Focus | Time |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Keyboard geography & C position | 15 min |
| 2 | Ode to Joy, phrases 1–2 | 20 min |
| 3 | Ode to Joy, phrases 3–4 | 20 min |
| 4 | Chain the whole melody | 20 min |
| 5 | Dynamics & steady tempo | 20 min |
| 6 | Left hand single notes: C & G | 20 min |
| 7 | Full performance + record yourself | 25 min |
Day 1 — find your way around
- Open the online piano and find middle C (C4). Play every C on the keyboard and hear how they’re the same note, just higher and lower.
- Set up the C position: right-hand thumb on C4, fingers resting on D4–G4.
- Warm up: play 1–2–3–4–5 up and back down, slow and even. Finish when it feels boring — boring means automatic.
Day 2 — the first half
- Learn phrases 1 and 2 from the Ode to Joy tutorial, two notes at a time. Add one note per round.
- Hum each phrase before playing it. If you can sing it, you’ll hear your own mistakes.
- Stop while it’s still fun. Seriously — that’s the whole trick.
Day 3 — the second half
- Good news: phrases 3 and 4 are repeats of 1 and 2. Relearn them anyway — the endings differ slightly.
- Drill the two endings separately. They’re the only place the song can catch you.
Day 4 — chain it all
- Play phrases 1→2, then 3→4, then all four without stopping. Expect seams; slow down at every seam.
- Never practice a mistake. If a spot breaks, isolate it, fix it slowly, and only then continue.
Day 5 — make it music
- Count 1–2–3–4 aloud while playing (see rhythm & tempo). Even rhythm first, speed later.
- Add dynamics: play the repeated opening softly, the climb to G4 louder, the final phrase strongest.
- Hold the last note of each phrase full length — let it ring.
Day 6 — add the left hand (a little)
- With the right hand resting, find C3 and G3 with the left hand. Play them in alternation, four beats each.
- Now hold a single low C under the first phrase only. One note per phrase is enough — instant depth.
Day 7 — perform it
- Warm up two minutes, then play the whole piece once, slowly, for an imaginary audience.
- Record yourself on your phone. Listen once, note one thing to improve, play it again.
- Play it for a real person. The applause is better than you expect.
That’s the week. After Day 7, keep the momentum: learn a second melody like Happy Birthday, or add chords with the basic chords guide. The online piano is free and always open — Day 1 can start right now.
