How to play Happy Birthday
Traditional · 3/4 time · About 2–3 days of light practice
This is the song you will actually play for people. It’s short, everyone knows the words, and it fits in C major with mostly white keys. One quirk: the two highest notes sit just above your computer keys — we’ll show you the easy way around that.
Before you start
- Open the online piano and press X once to shift the keyboard up an octave (Base C4). Now your keys cover C4 through E5.
- The key map for most of this song: G = G4, H = A4, J = B4, K = C5, L = D5, ; = E5.
- G5 and F5 are not on the keys. For those two notes, click them on the on-screen keyboard with your mouse. (Pressing X again shifts the whole layout up, but that changes every other key — clicking the two high notes is simpler.)
- Feel the waltz. This song is in 3/4: strong–weak–weak, like ONE-two-three, ONE-two-three.

Practice tips
- Master the waltz first. Clap ONE-two-three until it’s automatic. The first note of every measure is strong; the other two are light. Our rhythm and tempo guide drills this.
- The pickups swing in. The two “Hap-py” notes come before each strong beat — they lean into it. Don’t start each line heavily; let it arrive.
- Sing the syllables while playing. Hap-py birth-day to you. If the syllable and the note agree, your timing is right.
- Handle the mouse notes early. Practice the jump from G to the mouse click for G5 a few times alone, so Line 3 doesn’t fall apart later.
Once it holds together, play it for someone — with feeling, then with the candles. For your next piece, work through Ode to Joy, or browse all our easy song tutorials.
